Measurability offers an excellent CV Service but unfortunately there are some jobseekers who do not avail for one reason or another. These jobseekers take on the task themselves. Below are CV, Resume, Curriculum Vitae writing tips and help to support those jobseekers. Take these CV tips on board and it will help enhance your CV.

CV Writing Tips – 1

Content – Content is without doubt he most critical aspect of CV writing. Many jobseekers fall down on content for a number of reasons. The find it difficult to put on paper what they actually do which means the fail to sell themselves. They write a list of duties and responsibilities without integrating some life with examples and achievements. They write CV about themselves without considering the employer. To enhance content – focus on the employer, breath some life into your CV with achievements and brain storm your duties and responsibilities (cheat – if you struggle access some similar job specifications online)

CV Writing Tips – 2

Positioning of Content – There are many views about CV layout/format and here is my take. A CV is a fluid document, so do not stick to rigid formats or layouts. As with a newspaper important information MUST make front page. I have many CV Examples where I went against the grain putting References or Hobbies on the front page. Don’t leave it to chance that the reader will look at the second page of your CV. Most will probably have made a decision on whether to call for interview by the end of the first page.

CV Writing Tips – 3

Catch the Eye – Your CV must be easy on the reader’s eye. Although visual appearance is not the number one priority it is still important. Keep your CV “Clean & Simple” as opposed to overdoing it. The important thing is to make it easy for the reader to find what they need as quickly as possible. Use white space, clear headings, bullet points, uniformity of font type and size effectively. Remember your CV has 30 seconds to make an impact so visually your will draw the reader in and then make an impact with the content.

CV Writing Tips – 4

Consistency – It’s fine to be creative, but consistency plays a far more important role. It conveys a logical and organised thought process and leaves a positive impression. An example is to consistently stay in third person. Different sections should resemble each other in terms of formatting, to ensure that information can be located easily.

CV Writing Tips – 5

Relevant Information & Be Concise – You must keep the length of your CV in check and relate to Tip 1. Focus on the employer or reader. Don’t repeat information for the sake of filling out your document. As with many other tasks less is more. You don’t have to use complete sentences or paragraphs. Be careful not to use of jargon and avoid slang.

CV Writing Tips – 6

Sentences Short & Crisp – CV’s must contain short, crisp statements and as outlined in the previous tip these don’t have to be complete sentences.

CV Writing Tips – 7

Bullet Points – From experience this is certainly my preference and that of most hiring managers. Bullet points make it easy for the reader to find information.

CV Writing Tips – 8

Use Plain English –There is myth that bigger words impress the reader – don’t believe it. Keep your language simple and try to use plain English.

CV Writing Tips – 9

Power Verbs or Action Verbs - I think Power verbs or Action verbs stand out as they convey activity. A conscious effort must be made to use action and power words in your CV. Action verbs normally end in “ed” for example – Created, Managed, Delivered, Coordinated, Sourced, Distributed, Designed, Supervised and Generated.

CV Writing Tips – 10

Avoid Lies – You will be caught out so enough said.
