Career Coaching in Ireland – Expert Career Coach

I regularly write about Career Coaching and the benefits it can offer to individuals. This Career Coaching article outlines what coaching can offer you. These benefits are great but when you get feedback from a client it helps to explain things a bit better.

A Career Coaching experience

Below I have outlined an email testimonial from a Career Coaching client I met with June ’06. She has outlined her experiences from a 1-1 career coaching session with the support of the OPQ32 personality questionnaire

How a Career Coach helped me!!

I met Paul recently for 1:1 career direction coaching. I am working in finance. I completed a business degree specialised in accounting which led me to start the professional accountancy exams. In the last year I have become very unhappy working in finance. When I met with Paul we discussed my current role, what I liked, disliked about it. We talked about my interests, hobbies and what motivates me. I opted to complete a personality profile the results of which Paul had with him on the day we met. From this profile and the discussion we had it was clear that finance was not the area for me. I never considered my personality when making a career choice before and the negative effects that a job not suited to my personality would have on me. I have always worked in finance and felt that this was the only area open to me. Paul explained to me that there are a lot of opportunities out there, that I was limiting myself by thinking I would need experience in order to change out of finance to another career. I found having met and spoken to Paul about what really motivates me invaluable and I now feel I have the confidence to look outside of the finance area for a career choice. I left the 1:1 meeting feeling a great sense of relief, knowing what options were open to me now and really looking forward to starting my search for a new career.

Interview Advice – Turning an interview around.

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Even when you have prepared thoroughly some interviews may not go to plan and you can still struggle. This can happen for a wide variety of reasons.

If an interview is not going to plan what can you do?

There are two options:

a) Continue on as you are and accept your fate. Thank the interviewer and leave the interview. You have sealed your fate and you will not get the job.

OR

b) Address the situation and try to rectify it and fight yourself out of the corner. If you are aware of the mistake you can admit to the mistake. You can point out the mistake and explain what you meant to say. If you feel the interview is not going well but are unclear why then just ask the interviewer for feedback.

Let’s face it you may not be able to pull the interview back into a favorable scenario BUT if the interview is not going well you certainly have nothing to lose.

Measurability can help you with all your interview preparation. We offer expert interview coaching and advice. Work with a leading Irish Interview expert.

Career Tests & Career Assessments – Interest Inventory

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Psychometric Testing and Career Tests can help you with career direction and career planning. They provide objective information to help you understand yourself better. There are a wide variety of tools available on the market across personality, motivation and interest. Career Coaches and Career Guidance Officers normally use these tools to help individuals find the right career path.

An interest inventory is a popular assessment tool used to facilitate career planning and career direction. We use SHL’s Career Pathfinder which is one of the leading career interest tests on the market.

Career Pathfinder

Career Pathfinder will identify where your interest lies against 6 interest areas – People, Enterprise, Data, Resources, Artistic & Ideas.

An example – If you have a preference for people.

People – Individuals who prefer this area like to work with people and enjoy working in groups.  They are likely to enjoy duties that involve caring or helping people with their problems.  A preference “people” may suggest someone who likes coaching, teaching, or developing others. Jobs may be found in Medical, Health, Education, Training, Advising, Travel, Hospitality or Sports

For information about career assessment tools contact Measurability. We work with individuals everyday helping them get their careers back on track.

Sunday Tribune Career Doctor
I am a career doctor with The Sunday Tribune – Here is a recent Q&A.I am planning to go into 3rd level education to help my career prospects. I have been told that without a 3rd level qualification you have less chance of getting a decent job?A 3rd level qualification is a prerequisite for many jobs advertised in the national papers or on the internet job boards. There is a perception that a 3rd level qualification is the key to career success but I have a somewhat different view on this.Through my experience in recruitment and career coaching I have seen many individuals with excellent qualifications who struggle with their career, often working in jobs below their potential. Equally, I have seen many individuals with little or no qualifications who scale the heights of different careers with relative ease. These observations would indicate that a qualification does not equate to career success but also that a lack of qualifications does not equate to career failure.A 3rd level qualification will open more doors for you and it will increase your chances of securing job interviews as outlined it can often be a prerequisite for selection to interview. A qualification will help you market yourself better while job hunting as many hiring managers put a weight on qualifications. Having said all this you still have to impress at interview and impress on the job when you have secured it.
