How your CV can help you through a difficult job market.

Unless you don’t listen to the radio, read the papers or watch the news on TV it is quite hard to miss the bombardment of negative stories about the Irish economy. Recession, job loss and debt are all words unfamiliar on these shores for well over a decade. Developments over the last year have a direct impact on job hunting and therefore individuals need to get themselves in tiptop shape when entering the job market.

The most important change in the job market is that there is now more competition facing jobseekers. In recent years many employers struggled to source suitable candidates often employing a less than ideal recruit. Now there are less companies recruiting and more unemployment so more people looking for work. This means that there will certainly be more choice fore employers. Jobseekers will have to make sure that they have an IMPACT CV, utilise all available job search strategies and sell themselves at interview.

CV – IMPACT CV

Fortunately for you most CV’s are poor. This means that if you put some effort into your CV you will increase your application to interview ratio. The more interviews you get the better chance you have of landing a job. You need to consider CV Layout, CV Format and ensure that your CV is focused. Remember your CV has a short window of opportunity to make an impact so don’t waste this opportunity.

CV Writing Service in Ireland

When you have identified your career direction the next logical step is to write a CV. Most jobseekers will have an old CV but others are starting from scratch. I would probably say that most jobseekers should start from scratch as 95% of CV’s I review are seriously flawed. Generally speaking jobseekers do not get CV’s or the basics behind good CV writing. Rather than point out the flaws I have identified some scenarios that many jobseekers fall into.

When writing your CV did you consider the employer?

It is amazing how many jobseekers fail to consider the recruiter when writing a CV. This will mean that a CV lacks focus and will contain vast amounts of information that is not relevant. Understand the client and what they want before you can truly write a focused CV that makes an impact.

CV writing service – “The patched up CV”

Did you write a CV early in your career and then each time you entered the job market just stick on details of your last role?

This is quite common. Many jobseekers prepared a CV early on in their career and just add on additional employment details every time they re-enter the job market. The problem with this CV is that it is often clear how it was formed. A big “tell” is the fact that quite often different formats and fonts are used with the add on details

Do you have one CV that you send to every job without amending?

Cardinal sin!! Ok if you are a sales rep and you are applying for sales jobs you can argue that one CV will suit all jobs. However within sales employers still have different requirements. But more importantly certain information may be more relevant to certain recruiters such as previous industry experience or even some of your hobbies & interests. Tailor your CV for each job.

CV advice in Ireland

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

I met with a client today to discuss job search strategies and interview preparation. During our discussion she produced a CV and a cover letter that she had paid a “Professional” to produce.

Ok it was not the worst CV I have ever seen but there were glaring mistakes. It made me think – hey you do a good job Paul BUT also you do not charge enough!!

Here are some of the mistakes ….

CV Mistakes

Career Objective – Employers do not care what you want. They only care about themselves and the simple fact can you solve their problem. Replace career objectives with value statements – this will focus on the employer and not you.

Small Font – I have good eyesight so when I have to squint to read the CV the font is too small. This professional sacrificed readability in the bid to make a one page CV. If the employer cannot read the CV then they cannot get the information.

Solicitor Language – Some professionals over complicate language. To be honest I did not understand the meaning of half of the words. Keep it simple!!

An last but not least the biggest mistake – The CV was designed with a “one CV fits all jobs” philosophy – This will not work and you will miss out on key interviews. A CV should be tweaked for every job you apply for. When I produce a CV I will educate the client about future applications and their CV.

Cover Letter Mistakes

The cover letter highlighted why I never read them. It was pure jibber. There were big words and sentences that tell you absolutely nothing about the individual. There was a one word used that I am afraid of writing just incase the creator reads this post. A cover letter is an opportunity to let you put your personality across – don’t waste the opportunity.

There are some great people out there who write CV’s for a living and there are some cowboys. Choosing a service provider is like anything else. Shop around BUT do not just focus on the lowest price. If you need help with your CV check out our site.

Career Coaching & Career Help in Ireland

Sunday Tribune Career Doctor
I am a career doctor with The Sunday Tribune – Here is a recent Q&A.I am planning to go into 3rd level education to help my career prospects. I have been told that without a 3rd level qualification you have less chance of getting a decent job?A 3rd level qualification is a prerequisite for many jobs advertised in the national papers or on the internet job boards. There is a perception that a 3rd level qualification is the key to career success but I have a somewhat different view on this.Through my experience in recruitment and career coaching I have seen many individuals with excellent qualifications who struggle with their career, often working in jobs below their potential. Equally, I have seen many individuals with little or no qualifications who scale the heights of different careers with relative ease. These observations would indicate that a qualification does not equate to career success but also that a lack of qualifications does not equate to career failure.A 3rd level qualification will open more doors for you and it will increase your chances of securing job interviews as outlined it can often be a prerequisite for selection to interview. A qualification will help you market yourself better while job hunting as many hiring managers put a weight on qualifications. Having said all this you still have to impress at interview and impress on the job when you have secured it.

Writing a CV – Lying on your CV

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Jobseekers lying on their CV in increasing with increased competition in the job market. Surveys have indicated that most hiring managers expect CV’s to contain lies of some form BUT this does not mean that they will accept lies if the uncover them. The answer is that they will not. Think again if you intend to falsify information on your CV as employers expect lies and they know where to look for them.

Education & Training – It is accepted that many jobseekers falsify education, training courses, grades and qualifications. It is generally accepted that employers will not check up on this information but you cannot be sure.

Gaps in the CV – This is now easier to get away with because jobseeker now make many more career changes during their career but it can be uncovered during reference checking.

Bumped up salary & benefits – Most jobseekers want to improve salary during a job move and will bump up their salary, commission and bonuses in a bid to get a greater increase. Salary lies are difficult to detect as most potential employers never speak to current employers for obvious reasons.

Enhance job duties – Basically this is the receptionist running the company scenario. A trained interviewer will normally pick this up at interview.

Jobseekers who lie on their CV rarely consider the consequences of these lies. They can get caught out and miss out on a great role, get caught out after they commence employment and get fired or land a job well above their ability and struggle badly. Generally speaking lies do not pay!!

For help to develop you CV contact us. We will help you design a CV that will make an impact without the need to tell lies. We help jobseekers sell themselves with our expert knowledge of CV’s and the recruitment and selection process in Ireland. Read what other jobseekers said about our CV service.
